We all need a little Type II fun to remind us what adventure is all about

Yes, Treen

You know those adventures that are just terrible until you get home and realize how much fun they really were? That's Type II fun. Probably the best explanation is from Kelly Cordes in 2009. We all want Type I fun, but usually have at least a little Type II. Hopefully, there's no Type III fun.

Last time I visited the Bathtub it was mostly Type II fun with a bit of Type I thrown in as a treat. It was early fall and a light snow covered the route. Treen and I both revelled in the coming of winter.

On this attempt to get to Dirty Harry's Bathtub it was Type II bordering on Type III. Here's why.

We followed a primitive trail that was steep enough to deprive us of breaths. Not breathing is no fun, but looking back the route was plenty pretty. Verdict: Type II

We navigated though the chaos resulting from a massive ice storm that shut down the valley and buried the trail in debris. Verdict: Type II (barely)

We transitioned to rotten snow over ankle-twisting rocks. Verdict: Type III

We climbed down into and up out of creek crossings for several miles of road walk. Verdict: Type III

We stopped short of our destination due to time, navigation issues, and avalanche danger. Verdict: Type II

We had to go back the way we'd come up. Verdict: Type III

So on average it was a II.V trip. Lucky for us one of the unwritten rules of the Types of Fun is that you always round down. It was just barely Type II. Phew. If it had been Type III I don't know that I could go back and actually the Bathtub is pretty nice.

Thank goodness for math.
