Hiking the mystery Middle Fork trail... or not

A snowy route up the Middle Fork

Clara, Tokul, and I headed out for an after-Christmas hike to help me get over a bit of cabin fever and to give Amy some time to quilt. There's a new trailhead on the Middle Fork road near the east entry to the CCC road that is probably just a new entrance, but might be something more interesting. Since the rangers and the Internet can't tell me what it is I figured this would be a perfect time to get out and explore.

Turns out the Middle Fork valley is getting way more snow than the South Fork valley. Go figure. (Duh. The eastern-facing side of the Si-Teneriffe-Green ridge always has more snow than the west face of Si.) By the time the pavement gave way to dirt there was a fine layer of slush obscuring the potholes. By the time we got to the bridge over the Middle Fork there was two inches of snow completely hiding the auto-eating holes in the road. I drove a little farther before the sleeping baby in the back reminded me that even if I got to the trailhead I ran the risk of being snowed in and freezing Clara.

So... we turned around and headed back to town. Little Mt. Si called to us so I called Amy to let her know of our change of plans. The Little Si trailhead was fairly empty, but still we passed a few folks on our way to the top. The the entire trail was clear of snow, but a very dry snow was falling on the upper third.

Clara got lunch at the summit where we were joined by a family (three generations) who appeared to be spending quality time on the trail. Since it was chilly and the clouds obscured the view we bailed quickly and headed back down. Clara fell asleep on the way down and let her head hang over the edge of the pack as usual, but she was all smiles when we finally got home.
