Russian Butte

Dan and Juneau showed up about 8am as Clara was finishing breakfast, but we got on the road only a little bit later than planned. Clara stayed home due to the inclement weather and we bundled up against cold temperatures in the lowlands and snow on the hills.

The plan was to hike up to the Absolute Last Promontory on the east slope of Mt. Green. (Green is the third peak after Mt. Si and Mt. Teneriffe.) The "trail" starts at the gate blocking the end of the Mt. Si road. From there it follows the CCC road before turning up hill for the last few miles.

(An entertaining aside: I had explored part way up the hill several years ago when Tokul and Juneau took off while we were hiking the CCC road. After 45 minutes they trotted back to where we had lost them looking all the world like the smug little teenagers they were. Argh.)

The trail gets relatively steep, but nothing too serious. A couple of switchbacks later we were at Far Enough Promontory and soon after at the Absolute Last Promontory. I climbed a boulder field to get a picture of the mountains over the trees, but otherwise the trip wasn't terribly exciting.

There are two routes to the summit which we decided against for this excursion even though we wound up making great time: four hours for 12 miles and 2,000 feet. One starts just below Far Enough Promontory and approaches from the south. The other starts from the Bessemer Mountain trail and makes the final approach from the north. Next time.
