Because you know that turkey ain't gonna be allowed to burn in the oven.
Ever since... uh... forever ago, the day after Thanksgiving was for hiking. Even before REI co-opted the day for #OptOutside, we were climbing mountains instead of shopping. Even though TNAB has gone to a better place (Damn you, COVID!), we're still showing up Friday morning for Teneriffe.
The first stretch is mellow as befits a maintained trail. But once you get to the waterfall, the trail turns steep. Straight up. You think it'll only last to the ridge, but then it keeps going. Up and up.
The boy asked if we were near the top. I scoffed. No. Not even close. More up.
At the the summit we were treated to blue skies and clouds rolling below. So perfect.
Rather than return the way we'd climbed, it being overly steep and prone to letting gravity have its way with us, we opted for the long way down. Strangely, it meant we'd have to climb first. Ugh. Lots of ups and downs.
As we passed through the cloud layer the sun streamed through the trees. Kinda magical.
But best of all, we didn't have to go shopping. Best day after Thanksgiving ever.
