Any surprise that although this was planned to be a "beach trip" with the family there'd be secret plans to convert it to a "mountain trip while staying at the beach"? No? Good.
I woke early and snuck out of the house to head to the mountains. The weird thing about the Oregon beach is parts of it have decent mountains right off the beach. This one promised a stiff hike and great views from the summit.
The trail up was rooty, but otherwise well maintained. I passed over a saddle and started descending toward the true summit. "DANGER - DO NOT GO BEYOND THIS POINT". No exclamation point, but it was in all caps so I figured they really meant it. I returned to the summit where the rocky spine of the mountain let me see the beach down below and the ocean to the west.
Back down before some of the others had rolled out of bed for the day. A thousand feet of elevation gain keeps the doctor away. (Except when I fall. Then it just serves to pay the doctor's boat payments.)
