On the way to the beach, we stopped at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park. Records show they had a terrible winter there. It was pretty nice in July.
There's a recreation of the fort they built, some nice trails down to the river, and a nice visitor center. As usual, I bothered a ranger to ask what we'd miss if they didn't tell us. The answer: An air-powered rifle!
I'm not usually a big gun guy, but dang if this wasn't a cool gun. It was like the air-pump bb guns so prevalent in rural areas. Was it practical? Meh. Handy if you ran out of gunpowder, but if you ran out of gunpowder you likely had bigger problems.
The downside of the visitor center? It didn't talk as much about the Chinook, Clatsop, and Nehalem people that were there before and after Lewis and Clark.
We wandered around a bit, got some stamps for those of us that hadn't been to the site before, and headed on.
