We had hoped to actually compete in this race when it was held back in February. It was supposed to be a snowshoe race and it sounded wicked. This and that got in the way, so instead we opted for the asynchronous version of the race.
Wait. Isn't that just wandering around in the woods? Well, yeah. But with a purpose!
It turns out navigating to checkpoints without the use of a GPS is fun! Who knew? Yes, we had multiple GPS devices with us and one of those could have signaled for help if we ran into real problems, but we stuck to maps and compasses. For the most part, we didn't get lost. (Though there was that one time when we thought we were there and in fact we were way over there.)
This "race" was similar to the race I competed in back in October, but minus the bikes. You may recall it was the biking portion of that race that wrecked me. In other words, this was great.
Had we raced against others, we wouldn't have won any trophies. Running around in the woods with the dogs and friends, though? We were all winners.
