When the sun goes down early grab your headlamp, your snowshoes, and head to the mountains

Tools of the trade
Because otherwise you'll be up to your waist in snow.
Sorry, no beautiful scenery or adorable puppy pics. This trip was purely about getting outside and breathing insanely cold mountain air. I've written before about the wonders of nightshoeing up ski slopes in the dark. Just remember your snowshoes and your headlamp and don't destroy groomed ski tracks. Otherwise, you just point uphill and go.
When the snow's falling and all you can see is the 20 feet lit by your headlamp you can't tell you're not in the middle of an alpine start on a major adventure. Pull the balaclava up over your nose and mouth and the breathing is almost as hard as at 14,000 feet.
The real difference is when you get to the top you can relax with a special cup of cocoa and look forward to a quick walk down. Otherwise, just like summiting a major volcano!
Most importantly, it's a chance to get outside instead of sitting on the couch. And if you have a couple of friends to share the mountain with it's even better.
