Big rain means big waterfalls and wet walks in the woods without anyone else around

Vibrance!

Spring in the PNW means rain. Lots of rain. And all that rain has a tendency to keep people off the trail. Silly people. It's the perfect time to go hiking.

When the rain pours down the forest drinks it up. The moss is greener and waterfalls are louder. Even the mud that sucks at your shoes is richer and prettier. And of course, no people. Did I mention it's the perfect time to go hiking?

So how to make the most of this opportunity?

  • Wrap yourself in waterproof gear. Gore-Tex is the standard by which all waterproofing gear is measured, but other breathable membranes like Pertex and Omni-Tech work, too. (Don't forget your feet.)

  • Bring some snacks because snacks make everything better. Especially chocolate.

  • Take your favorite hiking buddies with you. Especially if they're dogs and kids. They tend to be a little more pliable and willing to go out in the rain.

  • And make sure your camera is waterproof. You'll want to capture the empty trails and the roaring rivers. Heck, you might even find a smile or two along the way and you'll definitely want to record that.

So don't let the rain keep you inside. Find your nearest over-crowded trail and experience it just like it was before hiking was cool.
