On a slope of this kind
It used to be that I could always count on Bandera Mountain for a sunset on a Thursday night. We've had so many they figured heavily in last year's celebration of 10 years of TNAB. It certainly helps that the descent along the ridge, often still full of snow late into Spring, runs due west toward the setting sun, but there's just something special about Bandera.
Except on this night. It wasn't bad as much as it was just meh. Low clouds filled the valley, but not enough to hide the freeway. High clouds hid the sun as we climbed. A summit cloud pretty much killed any views we might have had from the top. But it wasn't raining or blowing us down the mountain. It wasn't too hot or too cold. There weren't even any bugs to write about.
In the end it was just a nice climb up a steep slope with a happy dog and happy hikers on a happy Thursday. And that's good enough. (Until next year. And then we darn well better get a sunset!)
