In a Honda Accord to see how far we can get up the Hansen Creek road. You know, a mostly unplowed road with huge holes almost completely iced over.
I know it sounds like I'm leading up to some catastrophic vehicular fail, but this time we were wise enough to pull over when certain death was just around the corner.
Unfortunately, that meant a long road walk. However, the ruts made for easy walking. We were in posthole city, though, when we took the low road.
In the woods it was mostly firm. Just firm enough to get us all confident and going fast enough that when we did punch through the crust it was both shocking and a little painful.
That's Humpback for you. It's a lovely mountain.
Once we switched to snowshoes it was easier even if it was steeper. The views would have been tremendous except for the clouds, lack of moon, and the whole night thing. And the wind didn't help.
Pics and retreat. Avoid the tree wells. Don't slip on the ice. Don't drive off the cliff. It was an adventure.
And it was so late when we got out that I abandoned poor Eric and he had to get his Pour House fix on the fly.
